2013 Midwest Junior Championships Preview
This year’s Midwest Junior Championships promises to be a great weekend of skiing for all kids who are 16 and under. Snow is plentiful, the course should be in great condition and the weather looks to be perfect – with temperatures in the 20s predicted for the weekend.
Saturday’s events feature individual start classical races and SkiX-c in the morning and a two skier by three leg sprint relay – the same event that Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall just won a gold medal in at the World Championships in Italy. Distances vary depending upon age, but are generally designed to take about three minutes per leg.
Sunday features mass start freestyle races, arranged by age group, followed by a SkiBall Tournament – kind of like soccer or Ultimate Frisbee, but on skis and with a ball instead of a frisbee . . .
The emphasis at the Midwest Championships is on team competition and fun. While individual champions in each category are recognized, there is also a team competition. Athletes score points for their teams by scoring in their age class competitions in the classic race, the sprint relay and the freestyle race. The team with the most cumulative points is recognized on the permanent team trophy. Find more information on the team competition here.
On-line registration available through February 28. Walk-up registration will also be available this weekend – but at a higher fee. Register Now!
