2016 Midwest Junior Championships Recap
Thanks to all who joined us this weekend at Theodore Wirth Park for three days of youth ski racing and festival events at the Midwest Junior Championships! A little evening mist on Friday night turned into warm temps and sunny skies for Saturday and Sunday, and while trail conditions held together well, there is no doubt that hundreds of skiers ages 15 & under just skied their way straight into Spring! Created in part as a way to encourage developing athletes to continue skiing until the snow melts, we accomplished that goal this weekend, finishing in nearly 60 degrees at the final SkiCross Time Trials event.
Teams from all over Minnesota and Wisconsin, and even a few from Michigan impressed spectators and race officials. The weekend itself is demanding with six competition events including Classic Tandem Sprint Relays, Classic Individual Start races, Classic Age Gap Relays, Freestyle Mass Start races, Freestyle Mixed Relays and finally Freestyle SkiCross Time Trials, in addition to a variety of Festival events available on Saturday. Saturday and Sunday’s Individual races are the final races in the CXC Youth Cup races series, and the amount of talent among racers was evident! The field of skiers was quite competitive this year, particularly in the U14/U16 age categories. End of season results for the CXC Youth Cup can be found here.
The weekend itself remains in friendly and fun spirits, with kids skiing around in t-shirts, snowflake-decorated cookies at the finish line, cheerful and entertaining announcers conducting interviews, experienced and kind volunteers, and and whole crew of supportive parents and coaches who are excited to cheer on their skiers.
